The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the central bank and apex financial institution of the country. It was established in 1935. The RBI regulates and oversees the banking system of India. There are various types of banks in India. Each type of bank is responsible to perform different functions. In this post, I have compiled a list of banks in India (Indian Bank Names List).

In India, banks are classified into four categories. Types of banks in India are as under.

Public Sector Banks in India

Public Sector Banks are the banks that are owned by the Government. The Government is the major shareholder of more than 50% in the bank. Public sector banks (Govt. Banks in India) are further classified into two categories:

  • State Bank and Associates
  • Nationalized Banks in India
